The Small Business Health Care Tax: A Job Loser
Congressman Pete Sessions lives in Dallas, Texas and represents the 32nd Congressional District of Texas. First elected in 1996, he sits on the House Committee on Rules and serves as Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
As America’s top job-creators and the backbone of our economy, the success of small businesses will determine the success of our nation’s economic recovery. Despite their critical role, Congressional Democrats have proposed hundreds of billions of dollars in tax increases on small businesses across America.
Why? To finance a government takeover of health care. Here’s how it works:
- If you report income over $350,000 your taxes will increase between 1 – 5.4%.
- If you do not provide health insurance for your employees, you could face an additional 8% penalty tax.
- If you purchase health insurance for your employees, you will be taxed on those health care benefits.
That’s right. Under their bill, you will be taxed if you purchase private health insurance and taxed if you do not provide health insurance for your employees. And if you like individual health insurance, you had better buy it now because new plans will be outlawed under the bill.
The Democrats’ bottom line: a government takeover of health care resulting in higher costs, more taxes, fewer choices, and intervention in the patient-doctor relationship.
This is not change that small businesses can afford.
Instead of increasing taxes and killing jobs, I support patient-centered reforms that make health care more affordable, reduce the number of uninsured, and increase access to quality care.
Under the House Republican Health Care Plan, we specifically address the challenges that small businesses face in obtaining and providing health care coverage. Our plan enables small businesses and other organizations to band together to obtain lower health insurance costs, and we provide a new small business tax credit to help employers offer health care coverage.
Congress must work toward real reform that protects small business jobs and provides every American access to affordable, patient-centered, and quality health care of their choice.
