Battling the Heat Wave
You don’t have to take a look at the thermometer to know that it is ridiculously hot outside this summer. People across the country are trying to enjoy a miserably scorching summer that is breaking temperature records left and right. How are you coping with these astronomical hot days? After being locked inside for days on end, you are probably ready to see that there is life outside your doors. Smother the heat of summer with these helpful practices to live better and save more.
Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day
Try to avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The rays from the sun are the most dangerous during this timeframe. Plus, your body has to work harder to maintain a safe temperature within your core, and you must drink more water to stay cool. To enjoy time outside, head out in the morning or in the evening when temperatures are lower and the day is more pleasurable.
Drink Water
Speaking of drinking water, how many glasses are you getting each day? When the temperature escalates like it has more recently, you must keep your body hydrated. In fact, you may require more water to keep up with the increasing heat. Maintaining the hydration level your body requires helps ensure that you avoid headaches resulting from heat or dehydration, retain your energy levels and give you something to stay cool and perspire.
Dress Appropriately
Wearing protective clothing is another thing to help you combat the heat. Lightweight, loose-fitting garments allow air to circulate over your skin, creating a natural ventilation system. Limit the number of layers you wear to prevent heat-related illnesses. Also, a hat will shade the sun from your face and prevent sunburn.
Eat Lighter Foods
Choosing appropriate foods helps your body fight the heat, as well. Eat small, light meals throughout the day to make digestion for you body easier and to keep your body temperature down. Fresh melons, berries, citrus and vegetables are refreshing choices when it comes down to making a decision about what to eat. Select something that is in season to expand your culinary options during this warm time of year.
Consider Others
Recognize that age and species play a roll in how a body copes with extreme heat. Children, elderly and pets have a harder time acclimating to scorching temperatures, so keep that in mind as you make plans for the day. As you run errands or look for entertainment in the middle of the day, choose things that allow you and your companions to stay in the air conditioning. Go shopping at the mall, watch a movie or visit a library to get out of the house.
Enjoy your time outside when the temperatures start off cooler in the morning or drop in the evening. You can still take part in the summer fun of grilling and hanging out by the pool, just keep in mind that the most opportune time is when the sun is not overbearing. Stomp out the blazing heat from your day. Simply following the sound advice above will make for a safer, cooler summer.
