Eat, Drink, and Be Scary

So you want to be Chewbacca? Or maybe Han Solo, Snow White or that strange guy down the street that always wears Hawaiian shirts with bunny slippers. Regardless of your costume, Halloween is a great holiday that allows you to embrace your inner child, have some fun and spend some great quality time with your family. However you decide to spend your Halloween, the Alliance wants you to do it safely.

Most guardians carefully watch what houses their children visit to prevent the real monsters from getting them. However, it’s also a good idea to watch not just where they go, but how they get there. There are 4.5 times more child-pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night, than any other time of the year*. So, make sure your child learns and obeys all the traffic safety laws. It is also a good idea to have them wear a reflector so that the drivers can see them more easily.

If a traffic mishap occurs, it’s good to know that the Alliance offers the Emergency Room Benefit. This benefit offers up to $500 in coverage for fractures and dislocations suffered by you and your dependents in the event of an accident. The Emergency Room Benefit simply gives our members a little less to worry about.

Another thing to consider on Halloween is the food. Many guardians already know that it’s a good idea to examine a child’s candy to prevent illness due to tainted treats. However, on average, over 208,000 children are rushed to the hospital daily, not for tainted food, but because of food allergies**. So when you are checking the candy, make sure that you check for high allergen ingredients such as peanuts, nut by-products, honey, strawberries, cow’s milk and eggs.

Even with all the prevention, sometimes accidents still happen. For non-emergency 24-hour medical questions, you can trust the advice from the Nurse Advice Hotline. The Nurse Advice Hotline gives you access to registered nurses who, on average, have 10-15 years of clinical, hands-on experience in an emergency room or trauma center.

The Alliance cares about you and your family. That’s why we strive to educate our members and offer you the best, most useful benefits. Have a fun, safe and happy Halloween.
