Fight Fat by Fidgeting

Tapping your feet, drumming your fingers, changing positions in your seat, what good could come of it, other than possibly annoying those around you? Obviously more than you might think. A recent study done by the Mayo Clinic found that there is a link between fidgeting and a lean physique.

Research found that people who are prone to fidgeting are generally leaner than those who don’t. They refer to this as NEAT -- "non-exercise activity thermogenesis," or calories burned during the activities of daily living.

Small increases in NEAT can make a big difference. You can lose up to an additional 350 calories an hour by fidgeting. In fact, in some cases, fidgeting can burn more calories than other NEAT activities such as stair climbing and cleaning. Click here to view a Daily Activity Calorie Chart*.

Remember, every little move helps. Increasing your NEAT is a great step towards a healthier life. However, Alliance Consumer Edge Plan Members can take advantage of our Health Connection benefit.

Health Connection offers 20 to 60 percent discount on fitness club memberships, self-help programs, and alternative medicine solutions for only an additional $2.08 per month. For more information or to take advantage of this benefit, call 1-800-634-2968 and mention your Alliance Consumer Edge Plan Membership.

If you’re not an Alliance Consumer Edge Plan Member, contact Member Services at 1-800-733-2242 about upgrading your membership so you can also take advantage of this benefit.

Did you know: Burning an additional 350-500 calories a day could lead to a weight loss of 10-30 lbs. a year.
